How to Attach Dreadlocks

attaching dreadlocks

We are often asked, "How do you attach synthetic dreadlocks to real hair?" Don't worry. It's easy!

First, there are two kinds of dreads - single-ended dreads and double-ended dreads.

Single-Ended Dreads
Single-ended dreadlocks have a loop at one end. Take the amount of hair you want to attach and put it through the loop. Some dread makers make the loops rather large while others make the loops small. This is a personal choice depending on the dread maker and what they are trying to achieve. It is easier to put hair through larger loops but smaller loops are less obvious once in.

Sophie makes small loops because they look better. Take the amount of hair you want to put through the loop and use something to put it through because chances are you won't be able to put the hair straight through. We use a couple of bobby pins. You can also use yarn. Wrap the yard around the hair, then pull it through the loop.

Once you've got the hair through the loop braid the hair to the dread. Use the dread as one of the sections of hair for the braid. You can braid the hair onto itself so that it doesn't wrap too far down the braid, if you have longer hair and you find it to be an issue.

Double-Ended Dreads
Working with double-ended dreads is basically the same except there is no loop and you choose where on the dread you want to attach it to your head. Let's say your your dread is two feet long, you may want to attach the dread to the head one foot in or you may want it so that one end is longer than the other and the dreads or kind of layered. Take the group of hair you want to use for to attach the dread, separate it into two groups, then use the middle of the dread (or whatever section of the dread you choose to use) and use that as your third section of 'hair' for the braid.

Tying Off the End Once you have finished braiding the hair around the dread take a piece of thread or string and tie it off.

Voila! Your done. It's that easy!

Enjoy your dreads and feel free to e-mail us if you have any questions.
