Feb. 10th, 2008 The first film we saw today at the Berlinale Film Festival was Chiko by zgr Yildirim. Liked it. Predictible, but not to a degree where it ruins the film or where I feel like I have guessed it so there is no reason to finish watching it. I bet it will play in Strasbourg within the next year, or so. Our next event was Two Producers Sharing Their Secrets. This talk really got Sophie. Sometimes she says she just wants to act and not direct but then when she gets around the production end, she gets totally motivated. She was always around it when she was at Interlochen Arts Academy, but in France, the only time we seem to be around it is during our film festival travels. Our third film was The Feelings Factory directed by Jean-Marc Moutout. It was a French film. It was not really my favorite. At one point, the film tried to get a little surreal and totally missed the calling. Unlike Luis Brunel, who cannot seem to envision a film without a natural sense of surrealism, in The Feelings Factory it seems contrived, as though it was a struggle to incorporated and not at all natural. This film was a total miss for me. Not complete in and of itself, not ready for viewing and it did not flow well. Last but certainly not least was Ecstasy of the Angels by the Japanese director Wakamatsu Koji. He was considered a pornographer rather than a filmmaker back in the day. He was at the Berlinale film festival 43 years ago against the wishes of Japan. This time around he had full Japanese support and the country went so far as to finance the translation. Nice to know that some things do change in time.
