Cathedral of Strasbourg
The Strasbourg Cathedral is one of the finest gothic cathedrals in the world as well as one of the most interesting and intricate examples of gothic architecture anywhere. The ornate detail influenced by the gothic architecture decorates the Strasbourg Cathedral as it engulfs Strasbourg's old town. It is surprising that the cathedral is not the backdrop in more films. Image 'Dracula's Cathedrale de Strasbourg'. Or, 'Night Creatures of the Cathedral'. Or, Jack the Ripper on Vacation... just kidding, but really, the cathedral walls would be a magnificent backdrop.
As you stroll around the cathedral you can imagine it in an 18th century murder mystery, something like Bram Stroker's Dracula or Interview With a Vampire. In the few months Sophie and I have lived in Strasbourg, we've seen a couple films in production but never around the Cathedral. Perhaps Strasbourg is a hard city for filmmakers to work in and to get permits for filming. That would be a shame as the ominous nature of the Strasbourg Cathedral mixed with it's enormous size would inevitably set the backdrop for a spectacular film location. Considering the Strasbourg Cathedral is the 4th tallest church in the world it's hard to imagine this ominous example of gothic architecture might have been overlooked. But then again, is seems that Brugge was only recently discovered as an ideal shooting location. If you have enjoyed this article, please consider leaving a donation. I love giving to you.
