The European Exchange Rate and travel in Berlin, Germany
How the Exchange Rate Affects European Travel

Feb 16, 2008

Today the Exchange rate between the Euro and the US Dollar is 1 euro = $1 US Dollar. Another way to look at is it 1 US Dollar is equal to .68 euros. Where you travel within Europe determines just how much the European exchange rate will affect your travel and spending ability.

We are on an 11 day vacation in Berlin, Germany. The cost of living here in Berlin is much lower than in Strasbourg, France, where we live which helps with the staggering US Dollar to Euro current exchange rate. This has made our purchase power in Berlin much stronger than we are used to even with the overall poor exchange rate between the US Dollar and the Euro. The result is that our money is lasting a lot longer than we are used to.

Hostels here in Berlin are cheap, really cheap in the case of the hostel we are staying at - plus it offers free internet which meant I did not need to lug our laptop here or pay to use another internet source. The breakfast is 4.90 euros, all you can eat. Nice price for decent food and a good way to start the day. Cheap, good food is easy to find thoughout the city. We love sushi but we have not found a reasonably priced restuant in our hometown of Strasbourg, France or back in Antibes, France when we lived there. Cheap sushi is easy to find thoughout Berlin and it is delicious.

Public transportation is an easy and reasonable way to get around Berlin. I recommend buying the two, three or seven day pass as it will save you money and makes travel easier.

If you are traveling with children, most kid prices are half off. So museums and movie tickets in Berlin become much more reasonable, even with the high rate of exchange.

If you are gay, you will find Berlin very gay friendly. Lots of open sexuality. Berlin is known for being a liberal-minded city.

If you like architecture, you will be more than amply impressed by the wide range of structures and styles for the very modern to the prefabricated concrete style utilized in the Eastern block and built by the Russians after World War II.

Another nice thing about staying in a hostel is that they usually offer a free city tour. The one at our hostel is a three-and-a-half hour tour which I have not had the time to take but have heard really good things about.
