Travel in Barcelona March 2, 2008 The rate of exchange between the US Dollar and the Euro has dropped again. The US Dollar against the Euro is worth a measly 0.66. Another way of looking at it is that it would take 1.52 US Dollars to equal 1 euro. The rate of exchange will affect you differently depending on where you travel. We found Basel, Switzerland to be extremely expensive. Paris is large enough to where you can find a nice variety of prices. Strasbourg, France tends to be a little pricer because it's a smaller, touristy town with money where the European Union resides that also increases the wealth of the city, hence the overall prices. I just got back from a trip to Barcelona only to find that the dollar had decreased by another penny. If the dollar continues to decrease and you are traveling to Barcelona than you will probably be in very good shape. You can easily get by on $40 dollars a day if you aren't looking for high-end adventures and eateries. With the exchange rate on an ever declining direction it is important to consider your location or, if where you travel is beyond your control it is good to at least know what to expect. Expect Barcelona to be cheap enough to equal what you might pay in dollars in the States. My favorite placeto eat, Que Bo!, cost between 4-6 euros per meal depending on whether or not I wanted it with chicken. Honestly, I couldn't finish it with the meat and usually only got it with feta cheese. I paid $23.10 per night for a hostel, Sea Point Hostel on the beach. There had several signs posted which stated that a person could stay for FREE for a while if they were willing to do a little cleaning. Rumor was 3-4 hours of cleaning a day. It is a very noisy hostel, so if that bothers you then weigh that into the equation of whether or not it is the best place for you.
Bar hopping is a must in Barcelona. Drinks are cheap and the bars drip with character. Barcelona bars are terribly fun place to play. Las Ramblas is a wonderful place to walk around and explore the wild and crazy people both locals and tourists. The open air market is just off Las Ramblas and a fantastic place to check out every kind of food imaginable. Delicious fruit drinks (probably 10-12 oz) are 1 euro each. Barcelona has a bohemian feel to it. It's gentle and easy like the sea. The pace is slow and comfortable. Although this is a cosmopolitan town with tons of fantastic shopping it still doesn't seem overly consumed by commercialism.
