Follow Your Travel Dreams

Jan. 16, 2010

Sophie and I recently moved back to the States from our three-and-a-half year stint of living abroad in France. For the past 8 years our memories have been sitting in boxes in a storage bin. While rummaging through one of the boxes I came across a piece of paper where I had written a list of places I would like to visit. The list is called, "Dream Travel". I wrote it back in 2002.

Dream Travel

Italy
Barcelona
1 month in France
Mexico/Ruins
Tahiti &/or Fiji
Carribean
Cruise
Big Sur
Madonna Inn
Hearst Castle
Niagara Falls
White Water Rafting
The White House
The Florida Keys

Places I'd like to Revisit

Mount Rushmore
Mammoth Site
Yosemite

Not bad for 8 years.
I've been to Italy - Florence, Venice, Pisa, Amalfi Coast, Tuscany. Drove from French border at Menton halfway down Italy's coastline visiting several little spots along the way.
I've been to Barcelona three times. Twice with Sophie. Barcelona is a fabulous city with a lot to do at very reasonable prices.
Sophie and I had been to France for a 10-day period when I wrote this list. We went back for a 15-day vacation, then a 30-day vacation, then moved to France for three-and-a-half years. First living in Antibes in the South of France for a year, then in Strasbourg for two-and-a-half years.
Sophie and I have taken two cruises. The first was last February when we took a 12-night Mediterranean Sea. The second was this past November for our Transatlantic crossing back to the States. The latter was a 14-night cruise.
Since creating this list Sophie and I have visited, camped in and hiked at Big Sur on several occassions. I always wanted her to be acquainted with the area. I'm very happy to know Big Sur is part of her life.
When I was a little girl, my mother, sister and I would visit the Madonna Inn. It was a lovely experience and one I wanted to share with Sophie. We have gone on a couple different occasions staying in suites and eating in their fine dining hall and breakfast area.
Hearst Castle is a place my father's mother took my sister and I when we were young. It was such a wonderful memory that I very much wanted Sophie to experience it as well. Soph and I have since gone several times. We have been on all four tours of the castle.
Sophie wanted to visit Washington DC. We did this one summer. It was fantastic. We visited a few of the museums on the mall and all of the structures created for the presidents. We also had our pic taken in front of the White House.
Just this past Christmas, Sophie and I spent down at The Keys. Since we hadn't moved into our new home yet we decided the best way to spend the holiday was to hop in the car and head down. It was absolutely lovely! A fantastic experience and way to spend Christmas.
There was a study done at Yale which tracked the percentage of grads in a particular year who had made a list of goals. Later, the class was revisited. 90% of the wealth from that year's class was held by the 5% of the students who wrote down their goals.

The lesson: Make a list.
