Being Frugal in France:
Buying Cheap Theatre, Dance and Opera Tickets

Dec 1, 2007

A couple weeks ago, Sophie and I went to the sold out show of King Lear. Sophie's major in school is Art History. For this major, the kids are required to attend a minimum of four pre-selected plays. King Lear was one of those plays.

I didn't buy tickets in time and the show was sold out. We called the theatre's box office and asked if there was a Waiting List. We were told that there was one. All we needed to do was show up at 8:00 pm to put our name on the Waiting List for the 8:30 pm show. There was a transportation strike throughout France during this time so there was a good chance we'd be able to get tickets. We live within walking distance of the Theatre National de Strasbourg.

We arrived at approximately 8:00 pm. There were approximately 20 names in before us on the Waiting List. Sophie and I added our name and sat down near the gift shop.

A few minutes before 8:00 pm, everyone stood up and crowded around the ticket booth eagerly awaiting their name to be called. (Note: The French don't believe in lines. However they are truly socialized and do everything together. So they all got up at the same time no matter if they were the 1st or 20th person in front of us in line and they all huddled around the lady who would slip them little pieces of paper allowing them access to the much praised 3:45 minute modern day rendition of Shakespearer's classic.)

We learned a couple things from this experience.
First, have cash in hand and lay it down fast. Credit cards are not accepted in the cashier's gray metal tin box. Exact change is most appropriate and probably expected. (Note: The French don't believe in dilly-dallying around when it comes to dealing with your business once it's your turn in line. That also goes for the grocery store where you are expected to have your food bag(s) packed by the time your total appears on the cash register, no matter how much you buy - whether it's two or 75 items.)

Second, buying tickets last minute is much cheaper than paying full price. When recently purchased tickets on-line for the upcoming show Road to Nowhere costing us a total of 30.50 euros (25 euros for my ticket and Sophie's school discounted ticket cost 5.50 euros) or $44.65 US. Whereas, the Waiting List tickets for King Lear cost us a mere 15.50 euros total (10 euros for my ticket and 5.50 for Sophie's ticket) or $22.87 US - a deal in either currency .

We learned from this experience and bought the tickets last minute for the Italian Dance troupe that just came through town and performed at the stunningly beautiful Opera House.

If you're a frugal or spontaneous type, I strongly recommend purchasing your tickets last minute. It makes great shows affordable to all!
