One can find an abundance of gargoyles perched upon the Strasbourg Cathedral due to the monstrous size of the building. The Strasbourg Cathedral is the fourth tallest church in the world and engulfs the center of old town Strasbourg. On this page you will find some photos of some of the gargoyles that line the Cathedrale Notre Dame de Strasbourg. Each of the gargoyles at the Strasbourg Cathedral is different for the other gargoyles. The photos on this page represent gargoyles from only one side of the Cathedrale Notre Dame de Strasbourg - the side where a visitor would enter either the Tower Tour or to view the Astronomical Clock. At times, there is something very haunting and mystical about the Strasbourg Cathedral. The gargoyles only further set the atmosphere where one might imagine Jack the Ripper stolling down a dark and desolate, narrow European side street. The Strasbourg Cathedral's statues are made from a porous red sandstone which, over time, desolves in the rain. Most of the statues tha decorate the Strasbourg's famous cathedral are imiations. Casts are made of the real statues. The original gargoyles are held across the street at the Cathedrale Notre Dame de Strasbourg museum. Every so often the replicas which are viewable on the Strasbourg Cathedral itself are replaced as a result of the penetrable stones eventual decay.
