Jobs for Teens in France Sophie has been talking a lot, recently, about wanting a job. She's a teenager. She wants more financial freedom and more control over what she buys and how much money is in her pocket. Yesterday, I suggested she go over to the local Teen Center (teen centers in France are socialized meaning such establishments are run by the government basically allowing all teen centers to contain the same information and opportunities) to find out what job opportunities for teens exist so Sophie could look into her options for summer and vacation jobs. What Sophie learned is that it is very hard to get a job in France under the age of 18-years-old. The only job that was suggested to her was a babysitting job. In France, you must take a three-day course followed by certification to be a babysitter. The course costs 200 euros per day. That is a total of 600 euros for the course - or $928.50 US. Sophie didn't ask if I would be willing to pay for the course, probably for a few reasons: 1. She's probably not too sure she'd be into babysitting enough to make the money back. 2. She's probably pretty sure I could think of more productive things to spend my money on. 3. Her time is better spent building her website. I said, "Huh. I bet you're glad you have your dreadlock business. She nodded. It's not that a teenager can't have a job in France. It's just that the teen might need to look into some alternative methods of creating an income. Sophie has been working on creating an income through two different sources - her blog and making and selling custom dreadlocks. It's not a lot of money but it also doesn't take up a lot of time and she can do it when she wants and in the luxury of her own bedroom rather than having to punch a clock for someone else and have certain hours be only for workings for another person. This way, Sophie is learning how to become self-employed, financially free and responsible for her own income. The goal of the website is so that it will be profitable enough by the time she's in college to give her a supplemental income so she won't need a part-time job and can spend her time focusing on her studies and other college activites. On the other hand, Sophie's dreadlock business creates an immediate income allowing Sophie to have a certain amount of financial freedom while, at the same time, learning about money. I enjoy watching her go through this process. She is constantly surprised by how fast the money goes which has turned her into a more astute consumer. Although Sophie is focusing mainly on getting a job that will generate an income for her now, my interest is more on her ability to earn money in college. I would rather if she started a business now that would also support her through college. This would most likely mean that she needs to continue looking at self-employment options for teens. She can continue making dreadlocks as a source of income, but she will want to bring in more money than the dreadlock business is offering her at the moment. She has decided to focus on creating a website that will earn her a monthly income over time. She has two years before she starts college which allow her to slowly and consistently build a money making website that will potentially earn as much or more than if she were to get a part-time job while in college.
One of the testimonials is by a teenage girl who makes thousands of dollars every month off a website she made of an island her family would visit every summer. The teen is now in college and the Site Build it! website gives her the money she needs so she doesn't need to get another job in college. Site Build it! has several case studies to help explain how they can help you build a money making website. If you go about half way down the page you'll see a case study on the 15-year-old money making teen and her website. The article is pretty interesting and did a great job encouraging Sophie and explaining the process of how a teen can create a money making website.
