Easy Ways for Kids to Make Money Jan 9, 2008 I'm a strong advocate for teens making money. Making money teaches teenagers how to become self-sufficient on a smaller scale, which is appropriate, in the beginning, while your teenager is just starting to create an income. Why send your 18-year-old out in the world (college or otherwise) without some work experience under their belt? It is better to introduce work into their lives while they are still under your protective wing. This way, if your teen runs into problems or have questions you are there to help and guide them. I believe that people should work in an area that interests them. If your teenager has a special interest or talent then perhaps they can find, or create, a job for themselves in that area. If you teenager loves clothes, perhaps working at a clothing store would be a great part-time job for them. If your teenager enjoys drawing maybe they can create art and sell it at the local monthly art show, or on Ebay or create web designs for MySpace users and put them on a website. The first thing to do is to think about income generating possibilities for your teen before it is time for them to seek employment. This way you are prepared with knowledge in hand. Some people are more inclined to be self-employed while others would prefer to work for another. Which is more likely to be your teenager's personal style? Whichever it is, work with it, not against it. Allow them to follow their heart and be motivated by the things they already enjoy. Then, help them figure out how that passion can become profitable for them. When we lived in St Petersburg, FL we used to visit the Clearwater Pier quite often on weekends. Lots of people had stands out where they would sell things. One girl in her early teen was a balloon maker. Her mother would always go with her, but it was the girl's job and her mother was just there to make sure her teenager daughter was safe. The teenager made all sorts of little balloon animals, flowers and other balloon figures, which parents and their children would line up to buy from her. Balloon making was a job this teenager could do on her own when she had the time. It created a income for her while at the same time it allowed her the opportunity to become self-employed. We know a teenage boy made informational and educational videos for his local church group for which the church paid him. He liked making movies. He made an agreement with the church where he would make certain videos on particular subject matter and they church agreed to pay him for it. There is a teenage girl who has gotten quite a bit of press as of late. She started out making wallpaper designs for herself and her friends for their MySpace pages. She made a website so her friends, and anyone else, could easily access her designs for free. She's been doing it for about three years now. She is 17-years-old and her business has profited her over a million dollars. There is a teenage girl who lives in Santa Monica, CA and finished filming her first feature film shortly before her 17th birthday. She found nearly a million dollars worth of funding for the project, which she wrote and directed, out of her hometown in Canada. This teenager is very lucky to have strong support from her parents as it would not be a task she could undertake very easily without them. Maybe they can tutor as a part-time gig. Does your teenager love to read? Maybe they can work at the library on a part-time basis. Does your teenager love to swim? Maybe they can become a lifeguard at the local community pool. Teenagers need to find themselves. They have things they enjoy doing. When they are able to make money at something they enjoy, it can allow them a sense of comfort as well as an income. Teens are ready to become more financially independent and responsible. We can help them along this path in a positive way by encouraging them to work in an area that makes them happy as well as a little bit of money. The time to teach teens about saving is when the teen begins to make money. Teaching them about saving from the beginning allows them to learn that saving is a natural part of making money. Teach them to put their savings away first, then the rest of the money goes to them or their needs (a new skirt, tea with friends, a movie, etc.) If you are unsure of how much a teen should save, I suggest a minimum of 10-20% of their income. Help them set up a savings account if they do not already have one. They will not miss having the money if they are always used to putting it away. Something else to consider is creating a stock account for them and allowing them to research and buy their own stocks, or to use the money market accounts as ways ways for kids to make money while the funds just sits there. More and more you see that kids make money from blogs and website. It is one of the ways for kids to make money on their own without much support or supervision needed from the parents. Can kids make money by blogging or building their website? Absolutely! It's a self-motivating, making making project for your teen. How to make money blogging depends on the kid's interests. One of the easy ways for kids to make money is by blogging about something that inspires them. Guitars. Science. Hair color. Trends. Language. Travel. Friends. Whatever! The point is this, if your teen is writing about something they love then they will keep writing and that is one of the easy ways for kids to make money online!
