Is it possible to make money online? I must say that I used to be a skeptic. That being said, I wanted to start my own website where I could share information about topics that interest me as well as information I felt could help other single moms and free spirits. The questions were: Would it be a hobby or could it generate an income. Could I create a money making website or a money making blog? If so, how much could I make? A couple hundred bucks a month? Could website monetization support me? It is early on in this experiment. I purchased the web domain about a week ago and have diligently - when time allowed - been reading about making money online as well as creating the layout of my money making website. I read that search engines do not like it when a website's topics are too broad. I also read that some people are able to live off a money making blog. Blog topics are often diverse and cover a variety of topics. That being the case, one wonders if focusing a website on a particular topic is important. Dooce is a blogger who has been around since 2001. Through website monetization Dooce supports her family of three. On the other hand, most of the sites where I have read about the importance of keeping to a narrow topic or reaching a niche audience have been from just that sort of site. Those niche sites also seem to be very high ranking with Google. My site will most likely have broader tendencies. Some people say that it does not matter what you write about as long as you have good content -- that search engines are sophisticated and looking for good content. Broken links and misspelled words seem to be a big search engine turn off. One person claimed that a webpage should not contain more than 250 words of content -- subscribing to the short and sweet philosophy. Another considered 500 to 800 words of content per webpage to be magic ticket for search engine optimization with special attention being given to the first 100 words. Everyone seems to agree that links and keywords are vital to a website's success in the world of search engine optimization. It was also recommended not to submit a site to search engines until the site has at least 5-10 pages of content.
