Vin Chaud (Hot Wine) Enjoy this wonderfully simply and delicious winter holiday drink enjoyed throughout France and Belgium. 1 gallon cheap red wine Oranges (between 1/2 to 1 per glass) Honey (optional) Warm on stove for about 10-15 minutes on a low heat depending on the quanity of vin chaud you plan on making. If it's not sweet enough, add more oranges. Honey is optional. I have found that the oranges make the vin chaud quite sweet by themselves. If you'd like to add an additional source of sweetness, add honey to taste. Believe it or not, really cheap red wine tastes best when making vin chaud. The first time I made it I bought a nice, full-bodied, velvety red wine. It tasted bitter and well... simply wrong for vin chaud. I went back to the store and bought a cheap bottle of table red (the kind you buy by the gallon or box is probably perfect) which turned into fabulous vin chaud. Lucky for you! Lucky for your wallet! This perfect drink for the winter months and festive holiday season won't put a damper on your budget. Pour the desired amount of red wine into a pot. Turn the stove on a relatively low heat. You want to warm the vin chaud rather than boil it. No need to cook out all the alcohol. Then, slice the orange into sections and add it to the pot. The number of oranges will depend on how much vin chaud you are planning on making. Estimate approximately one-half-to-one orange per glass. I've found that the orange peels tend to soak up much of the vin chaud. To remedy this, you might take the peel off the orange first. During the holiday season throughout France there are Marche de Noels (Christmas Markets) where one can buy an assortment of things from locally chocolates and wooden toys to vin chaud. Bring a little France into your home this holiday season by celebrating with European holiday tradition!
