A French Lycee is quite simply the French way of saying High School. In France, High School is called Lycee. There are three levels, or grades, in a lycee. - The lowest level is seconde which would be the American equivalent to 10th Grade. - The middle level is premeire which would be the American equivalent to 11th Grade. - The highest level is terminale which would be the American equivalent to 12th Grade. French education is not set up like American education. In France, a child in seconde (10th grade) learns Math, Physics and Geometry all at the same time. Each subject is taught as a different class and all are taught simultaneously. The French believe in identifying a child's strengths at a young age and gearing that child toward a career that uses that child's strengths. For example, Sophie is artistically-inclined so she is in the Literature option. Where as other children might be in the Science or Economics options, depending on their personal strengths. The option you enter in Lycee will determine the Universities to which you will have the option to apply. In France, there are certain lycees in each region that specialize in certain subjects. There are some schools that specialize in art, art history or cinema while other schools might specialize in the sciences or mathematics. Other relevant facts...
